Understanding the initial scan
The scan is how ConfluClean learns about your content. It discovers your spaces, inspects each piece of content, and calculates a lifecycle status for every item.
What the scan does
During a scan, ConfluClean:
- Discovers your spaces - every space you have not excluded is included.
- Inspects each item - it reads metadata such as the title, creation date, last modified date, and last viewed date.
- Calculates a status - based on the scheme assigned to the space, each item is classified as Up to Date, Stale, Inactive, Expired, or Excluded.
ConfluClean only reads this metadata to do its job. See Content statuses for how each status is determined.

Content types covered
ConfluClean analyzes the four main Confluence content types:
- Pages
- Blog posts
- Whiteboards
- Databases
If a content type is not present in a space, it is simply skipped.
How long it takes
A full scan typically takes a few seconds for small sites (under 100 pages) and up to a couple of minutes for larger sites with thousands of items. A progress bar keeps you informed while it runs.
How often the scan runs
After the initial scan, ConfluClean keeps your data fresh automatically:
- Delta scan (hourly) - a lightweight scan that picks up recently changed content so statuses stay current throughout the day.
- Full scan (daily) - a complete re-analysis of all content. The daily full scan also triggers any automations you have enabled.
You can change the hour of the daily full scan in Global settings.
